Why this park-up is a belter
We ended up here almost by accident and honestly couldn’t believe how good it was. This is one of those rare spots that feels like it shouldn’t exist, but does, and quietly gets on with being brilliant.
First win: 24-hour public toilets, free to use, clean, hot water, hand dryers, toilet roll, the full lot. No pretending, no “seasonal” sign taped over the door. They were open, well looked after, and clearly maintained.
The car park itself is completely level, with plenty of space. We had the place pretty much to ourselves overnight, apart from one late-night eejit doing laps trying to impress someone. Even that passed quickly, and the rest of the night was properly quiet.
There are picnic benches, bins, and uninterrupted views straight out over Lough Neagh. Waking up here feels peaceful rather than exposed, and there are no surrounding trees, which made it a solid choice during Storm Amy. There’s also a bit of a natural wind break to the rear, so despite the weather, we weren’t being battered all night.
Another big plus is access. There’s no height barrier in practice. There may technically be one, but when we were there, it wasn’t closed or causing any issues. Access in and out was easy in a motorhome.
Handy location bonus
This spot is very close to Belfast International Airport, which makes it ideal if you’re picking up family early the next morning or dropping someone off. It’s also a great stop if you’re breaking a journey before heading into Belfast itself.
Things to be aware of
The water here is not safe for dogs due to blue-green algae. There are warning signs, but they’re easily ignored, and we saw people letting their dogs straight into the water. Worth knowing and keeping an eye on if you’re travelling with pets.
Other than that, there’s very little to fault. It’s quiet, free, well-maintained, and feels like one of those council spots that’s flown under the radar.
Overall verdict
An exceptional free park-up. Level, peaceful, toilets open 24 hours, and views over Lough Neagh. We’ll 100 percent be back, ideally in better weather, but even in a storm, this place did exactly what you want a park-up to do.
