Parked Up at Enniscrone Pier – Off-Season Vanlife in Sligo

I finally made it to Enniscrone Pier, which sits in Carrowhubbuck South, County Sligo, right on the edge of Killala Bay. It had been a while since I’d written about a park-up, and this one reminded me why I love the off-season.

The coordinates, for anyone who fancies freezing in style, were 54°13’10.7”N 9°05’42.3”W.

The Night Before

It was out of season and I had the entire car park to myself. Just me, the van, and the Atlantic wind trying to rip the side door off. Around 11 pm I took the dogs out for a quick walk. They were thrilled. I was frozen.

While wandering about, I noticed a small cabin tucked behind the boats. It turned out to be a sauna. People were actually using it at that hour, hopping out in their shorts and diving straight into their surfer jackets before sprinting back to their cars. Fair play to them, because that sea wind could cut through steel. Not my idea of fun, but I could see the appeal if you were into that sort of self-inflicted misery.

The Morning After

About twelve hours later I was back out, dogs doing what dogs do, me carrying little bags of regret toward the nearest bin beside the now-closed toilets. Then I spotted three women taking a swim off the boat slipway. “Swim” might be generous — it looked like a very polite battle with hypothermia — but again, respect where it’s due.

I had planned to walk further along the coastal path, but the weather decided to add rain to the mix. That was my cue to turn around and get back to the van before it became a full Irish storm.

The Spot Itself

The car park looked flat at first, but it actually sloped ever so slightly. Not enough to bother with levelling ramps, though a few other spots nearby might have needed them.

The view made up for everything. The Atlantic stretched out in front of me, waves hammering the shore, the kind of scene you’d see in an ad for mindfulness apps.

Facilities were decent too. Toilets sat nearby, although only open in season, and the beach walk started right beside the pier. There was a solid phone signal and Starlink worked like a dream, so no complaints there. The town was a short walk away with a few restaurants, shops, and a friendly seaside vibe.

A Bit About Enniscrone

Enniscrone (or Inishcrone if you’re feeling Irish) is a seaside town with a five-kilometre stretch of golden sand. The place has been drawing families, surfers, and the occasional masochist sea swimmer for years. There’s also Enniscrone Golf Club, dating back to 1918, and the ruins of Enniscrone Castle if you fancy some heritage with your sand.

The pier itself forms part of the Wild Atlantic Way, and on a clear day you can see across Killala Bay toward Mayo. It’s one of those spots that proves County Sligo has just as much to offer as its more famous neighbours.

The Verdict

Peak season here would probably be chaos. Vans packed in tight, Instagram poses at every turn, and nowhere to walk a dog without photobombing someone’s reel. But off-season? Bliss. Just me, the dogs, the sea, and a bit of weather to remind you you’re alive.

It ticked all my boxes:

  • Dog-friendly

  • Quiet

  • Scenic

  • Decent signal

  • Town within walking distance

Sure, the toilets were closed, and the wind had ideas of its own, but that’s part of the charm.

Tips for Anyone Stopping By

  • Aim for the flattest-looking area of the car park.

  • Bring waterproofs. The rain waits for no one.

  • Off-season means no toilets, so plan accordingly.

  • The coastal path is worth a stroll when it’s dry.

  • If the sauna’s open, book a slot — or just watch braver people run in and out of it.

  • Signal is strong, Starlink stronger.
