The Lake of Shadows Hotel: Not an 80’s Horror Flick, Just a Damn Good Feed in Buncrana

So there we were, stepping into a place that sounds like it should come with its own spooky soundtrack and a bloke in a hockey mask lurking in the corner, The Lake of Shadows Hotel, Buncrana. But don’t let the name fool you. Turns out, it’s less Friday the 13th and more Friday Night Feasting.

The Usual Suspects: The Dinner Crew

It was me, the wife Kathy, her cousin Lisa, and Lisa’s husband Gerry. We were treated to dinner (always the best kind, nothing tastes better than free, right?), so I can’t tell you the final bill, but I can tell you the food was a solid 9 out of 10. That’s not a score I give lightly.

The Mains: Ribs, Steak, and a Side of Shared Responsibility

Kathy and I did our usual thing of sharing a plate. Partly because of my Mounjaro-fuelled weight loss journey, partly because we’re romantic like that, and mostly because I’ve learned I don’t need to eat enough to feed a rugby team at every meal. We went for the Ribs and Steak combo, which came in at a very reasonable €26. Portion size was decent, cooked well, and we even got two bonus fried onion rings. They were crispy, not soggy. Worth a mention.

Lisa and Gerry both went for the 50/50 special – half chicken, half steak. Garlic potatoes all round, because you can’t not, plus a side of boiled veg to make it look like we were being healthy.

The food came out hot, looking the part, and most importantly, every plate was cleared. No sad chips left at the side. No gristly bits pushed around the plate. That, to me, says it all.

Dessert: The Grand Finale

Lisa, clearly the winner of the evening, ordered a Baked Alaska. I mean, fair play, calling the 70’s for desert, that’s a bold move. Kathy and I shared a Chocolate Fudge Cake with ice cream, because, again, sharing is caring (and calorie counting). Gerry went for the classic Apple Pie and Custard, safe choice, never offends.

Drinks: The Black Stuff

I had two pints of Guinness because one is never enough in Donegal. Smooth, creamy, and exactly what you want from the black stuff. No complaints there.

Service: No Ghosts, Just Good Vibes

The staff were friendly, efficient, and on the ball. The food came out hot, not so quick that you wondered if it had been sat under a heat lamp all day, but fast enough to keep the hunger gremlins at bay. Plates cleared, everyone happy. That’s a rare thing with a table of four.

Worth pointing out, we didn’t book! Although the place was busy, we didn’t have to wait to be seated, which is always a risk on a Sunday, as the Irish do love to dine out where possible for a Sunday lunch.

Atmosphere and Vibe

The place has a cosy, old-school feel. Dark wood, simple decor, and that sense that it’s been there for years and isn’t in a rush to change. It’s not trying to be a trendy gastro-pub, and you know what, that’s fine by me.

Final Thoughts: Worth a Visit?

Absolutely. The name might sound like a low-budget horror movie, but the only scary thing about The Lake of Shadows Hotel is how full you’ll be when you leave. The food was solid, the portions fair, and the Guinness just right. At €26 for a main, it’s not going to break the bank, and if you’re in or around Buncrana, I’d say give it a go.
