Motorhome Parking Derry: Why St. Columb’s Park is a Hidden Gem

Motorhome parking Derry can be hit or miss — but St. Columb’s Park is one of the good ones.

If you’ve ever tried to find a decent spot to park a motorhome in Derry without having to reverse uphill into oncoming traffic or explain your life choices to a pensioner in a Ford Fiesta, then this is for you.

Tucked away at St. Columb’s Park, this little parking gem comes with a mild gradient, a questionable bin, and a strong dose of “quiet enough to actually sleep” — which, let’s face it, is half the battle.

First: the practical stuff

The bays are on smooth tarmac, clearly marked, and mercifully pothole-free. But don’t get cocky — the gradient’s enough to make you roll out of bed like an egg on toast if you skip the levelling ramps. Trust me, you’ll feel it. The layout isn’t made for mammoth vans either. If yours has a bit of rear overhang, aim for the top or bottom of the car park. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to leave and there’s a Nissan Qashqai blocking every exit like a game of Tetris.

Overnight parking? Yes. And it’s blissfully quiet — no residential areas nearby, and no teenage loitering. Unless you count the occasional dog walker with a suspiciously judgmental spaniel. Local traffic is minimal, and you can expect a decent night’s sleep without needing to relocate at 3am.

Facilities? Erm, well…

There’s a bin. One. It’s full. Has been since the first lockdown, probably. You’ll spot it from your van window and experience that familiar feeling of “this should be better, but I can’t be bothered starting a campaign.” I did, though. Told the local MLA. He passed it on. One year later — same bin, same overflowing shame.

Toilets? Technically yes, if you can hold it long enough to get to the nearby hotel or bars. Otherwise, it’s either the wild wee shuffle or your own van loo.

What’s nearby?

Quite a bit, actually. You’ve got The Bakery about three minutes away — solid coffee, banging pastries, and outdoor seating if you like your croissants with a side of hypothermia.

Across the Peace Bridge, you’re right into the city centre, but even before you get that far, there’s Ebrington Square — once a military base, now repurposed for slightly different forms of shouting (mostly about cocktails).

I’ve personally enjoyed a pint in Stitch & Weave (great evening vibe), had a solid meal at The Embankment Bar & Grill, and sampled enough beer to forget what time it was at the Walled City Brewery. All recommendable. Except the Ebrington Hotel, which I reviewed after a chicken burger experience so bad it could be considered performance art. Hair included. Five stars for trauma.

Tips Before You Go

• [Affiliate: Levelling ramps] are non-negotiable. The slope will ruin your sleep and your coffee table setup.
• No toilets nearby, so plan ahead or be prepared to buy an overpriced cocktail just to use the facilities.
• Check Park4Night for updates — try and get in early, just incase a Spanish Nomad steals the best spot before you!

Final thoughts

We park here often. Partly for the location, partly because it’s always felt safe, and partly because I’m stubborn and don’t like change. It’s even made its way onto Park4Night, and judging by the Spanish-plated motorhome currently occupying my usual spot, I’m not the only one who rates it.

So if you’re rolling through Derry and need a central spot that’s mostly level, mostly quiet, and mostly functional, this’ll do nicely. Just bring your ramps and lower your expectations about public bins.
