If you ever fancy swapping the coastal winds for a forest breeze, Old Castle Archdale motorhome parking is a solid choice. We rolled in around 11am, greeted by a scattering of cars, the usual mix of weekend-style visitors, families, dog walkers, and the odd goggle-wearing cyclist pretending to enjoy the uphill bits.
Most of the walking trails are currently closed, likely due to the winter storms that have spent the last few months uprooting trees like they’re in a bad mood. Still, there’s plenty of space to stretch the legs and take in some autumn air.
Woodland wanderings and stealth vans
We parked in the lower tier of the car park, a more level nook, and were soon joined by a couple of “stealth campers”. You know the type: white panel vans with solar panels that scream I live here now.
Mrs. M and I took Lucky and Milo out for a wander through the woods. Milo spent half the walk claiming everything in sight (classic small-dog energy), while Lucky lumbered happily through the leaves. We stopped by the ruins of Old Castle Archdale itself, apparently a State Care Monument, though what that actually means is anyone’s guess, before heading down towards Tom’s Island marina.
Down by the water’s edge you’ll find a few picnic benches, and even those built-in BBQ plates for your disposable tinfoil jobs. Didn’t spot any bins, but I was too distracted by the calm of Lower Lough Erne to really care.

Facilities and creature comforts
The immediate area has a covered shelter for removing muddy boots, and a few wide-mouthed bins (always appreciated by vanlifers trying to keep things tidy). There are picnic benches, a bike stand, and enough flat ground for a peaceful overnight.
Vodafone gives a few bars here, while Mrs. M’s O2 setup will remain a mystery tonight (she’s off celebrating her 50th over on Lusty Beg). That’s actually why we’re here instead of our usual northern haunts.
As November evenings close in, the gold and red leaves cover just enough mud to keep you guessing. Starlink is pulling strong with a clear line of sight above the trees, the heater’s ticking over, and both dogs are out cold after their walk. Perfect setup, really.
