Point Road, Magilligan – The Bit at the Very End
There’s a particular type of peace found when your van faces a body of water, there’s no traffic noise, and the only drama comes from watching the ferry awkwardly try to dock in the wind. Welcome to Point Road, Magilligan. Coordinates: 55.18917, -6.96314 if you’re fancy with your GPS. Or just follow the road until it ends — literally.
Park-Up Vibes
This isn’t your manicured campsite. It’s raw, open, and perfectly suited for people who don’t like people. You’ll get a mostly level grassy area right before the ferry slipway. Plenty of space to turn, park, and judge everyone who didn’t bring their own kettle.
Views? Oh, just Lough Foyle spilling out into the Atlantic, with Greencastle on the other side and the faint promise of “we could go to Donegal”, if the ferry decides to run today.
Mobile signal: Surprisingly decent, if you’re set to roaming. Enough for streaming, doomscrolling, and checking if the ferry’s still on.

Can You Sleep Here?
Unofficially, yes. It’s a known wild camp spot and nobody seems to care, though don’t leave out your camping chairs like you’re claiming territory. Keep it tidy and they’ll keep ignoring you.
Just remember you’re in the middle of an open plain, so if the wind decides to visit, it will visit. Lock everything down, including your will to live if the weather turns.
Facilities
Let’s not pretend: there’s not a lot. No toilets, a couple of bins, no fresh water. This is the kind of place that assumes you’re self-contained and mildly competent. Though, there are a number of pub-type tables and chairs, with some dishevelled BBQ spots.
Top Tip: If you do need a ‘proper’ toilet, consider taking the ferry across and using the public loo in Greencastle. That’s commitment. Or, take a dander up to the local bar for a sneaky-pee and a cheeky pint.
What To Do Nearby (Aside From Staring at Boats)
Take the Ferry: It’s foot-friendly and motorhome-possible. Great if you want a day trip to Donegal without driving the long way round.
Walk the Beach: Head east to Magilligan Point Beach. Miles of sand, shells, and suspiciously damp dogs.
Martello Tower: It’s technically historic, which means you can squint at it and pretend you’re cultured.
- The Point Bar: This is a lovely spot that we’ve taken the family to countless times. Highly recommended.

Final Thoughts
Point Road is that kind of spot you accidentally discover and then quietly gatekeep. It’s not glamorous, it’s not got five stars on Park4Night, and that’s precisely the appeal. Come here to reset, recharge, or just pointlessly wait for a ferry that may or may not show up.
