Swan Park, Buncrana: A Motorhome Retreat with Character

The Weather? Bonkers.

If you like a good weather drama, Swan Park won’t disappoint. Storms, sunshine, storms again, a bit of calm, then more storms, winds strong enough to peel the paint off your van, and then, just for fun, a bit more sunshine… before another storm rolls in. All of that usually happens within the same hour. Last week was a sun trap, but this week? The UV rays have well and truly left the building.

The Park-Up: Read the Signs, Ignore Your Co-Pilot

We’re parked at the last car park before the Swan Park entrance. Don’t make the mistake Mrs M nearly had me do: trying to drive under the archway into the newly refurbished (2022) park. I had a gut feeling it wasn’t going to fit, and sure enough, we would’ve been stuck. So I carefully backed out and settled in the main car park entrance, a good move.

This spot looks out over Lough Swilly, with Castle Bridge off to the right. At night, the bridge light flickers on and off like a disco light, probably a dodgy wire somewhere. The wind? Relentless. No awnings, no chairs, unless you fancy chasing them across the car park and into the Swilly. You really shouldn’t be putting these out anyway in places that aren’t specifically for motorhome/camper use.

Rules & Rants

No official parking restrictions, just the usual: clean up your dog’s ‘eggs’ (plenty of those lying around) and don’t let your pooch off the lead unless you can actually control it.

Noise-wise, it’s peaceful… unless you count the early-morning coffee wagons. Three of them are situated around the town, all cranking their petrol generators from 8:30am onwards, as was the one that parked up to the rear of us. Great for caffeine junkies, not so great if you like a lie-in.

The nights, however, are blissfully quiet, apart from the wind doing its best to send us off to see the Wizard of Oz.

Essentials Nearby

A stroll into town takes 8-10 minutes, where you’ll find a big supermarket and The Lake of Shadows Hotel, where we grabbed dinner (read our full Lake of Shadows review here).

Signal’s solid too: 5G on Vodafone, 4G on 3 Ireland’s roaming MiFi.

Walks, Waterfalls & a Rubbish Problem

We walked the full length of Swan Park, taking in the waterfalls and checking out the upgraded bridge from the 2022 refurbishment, which looks sharp! Bins are the usual issue, though: hard to open, too small to actually put a bag full of waste in. Ireland’s bin game is a bit of a shambles, so we’ve got two full bags of rubbish stashed in the shower, waiting to be dumped over the border in Northern Ireland.

Local Craic & Good Company

Kathy’s cousin Lisa and her husband Gerry popped by twice—once for a visit, once to drag us out for lunch (that’s The Lake of Shadows again). Good company, good laughs, and another reason Swan Park is a cracking stop if you’re in the area.

Final Thoughts: Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely. Great views, decent signal, walking distance to town, and a genuine sense of place. Just brace yourself for the weather and the bins, and maybe bring a bungee cord for the dogs so you don’t lose them to the wind!
